The one thing I loved about this film was the score. Some scenes are carried just by the score itself and they were beautiful. The score also highlights moments of dread with the score contrasting what is on screen very well. It’s a given that Andy Serkis would deliver a great performance as Caesar and of course he does. Some great emotion from a great performance though I do not think nomination worthy. But great. Bad Ape was an excellent edition to the cast with exceptional vocal work from Steve Zahn. The scale was excellently realised with vast shots full of life. However, I do not think the scale was used to its full potential, but amazing nonetheless.
The marketing posters, trailers and even the title of the film itself is very misleading. I know trailers are bound to build expectations for a film you’re looking forward to but in the title of a film itself? Take a look at this poster…
You won’t get this. Sorry. I also found most aspects of the film very anticlimactic. The rounding off for characters, the film itself, the action, all never living up to expectations. I wasn’t particularly excited for this film either, I was just promised a war I didn’t get.
The motion capture is astounding and just as good as it was in Dawn and miles ahead from Rise. Where this ranks in terms of the other films, it currently sits at the bottom. But, I wasn’t fond of the others on first viewing either. It was overall disappointing but think it would work well when marathoning the trilogy.
War For The Planet Of The Apes – 3.75/5
In my opinion, War For The Planet Of The Apes is more of a Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is more of a War For The Planet Of The Apes. Wrong title for wrong film.
