I heard praise for the soundtrack before I saw the film and thought it couldn’t be as good as everyone says it is. It might not be as good but is utilised so so well. It is one of the best utilised soundtracks ever. Edgar Wright’s direction is flawless. Pretty much all his films are shot beautifully and Baby Driver is no different. The car chases are fantastic though not as often as I thought they would be. Coming from someone who’s not a huge fan of cars though; it was good. Out of all the scenes in the film, the opening coffee run stands out the most. Everything in it is fantastic. Ansel Elgort, the song and most importantly the background. One of the best scenes of the year.
I didn’t care for the Romance between Baby (Elgort) and Debora (Lilly James). I found that how they have been with most of the film didn’t coincide with the rest of the film. Not just because it has the least action in it but because I didn’t care much for their romance, the second act of the film is it’s weakest and did drag the film down. There were also three scenes that were very similar and all built to nothing until the third and final scene.
Odd, in a film about car chases I found the on foot chase around three thirds into the film the most entertaining action scene in the whole film. I really do prefer action scenes with people instead of cars. This is also arguably Edgar Wright’s most serious film yet which is good for someone who isn’t a fan of the pretentious Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
Baby Driver – 4/5
