There was one great scene in a plane that I knew before going into the film that it was going to be my favourite part of the film. It was. It looked great even though it ended with an odd cut but it was the highlight of the film. Other than that…
Tom Cruise was way too old for this role. I don’t mind the Cruise but he was too old for this. If his character was younger then he could’ve been funny but because of how old he was he just came across as an asshole. This film must have used the same flashback and told the same story at least five times. As soon as it was used at the start with unnecessary narration I kind of had a feeling we’d be hearing this heavy handed story more than once. The script was extremely bland with lines that just didn’t work for the film. I found that scenes would have been better without the lines and the acting could’ve just shown how the characters were feeling. The unnecessary comedy was awful. The film is trying to be Indiana Jones but those films let the audience decide when it was funny and knew when to place comedic scenes. Here it’s as if they’re saying “laugh now”! The action could have been good as if you watch the behind the scenes footage it was done very well in camera. In the films however it’s edited to where we can’t tell and is darkly lit with poorly contrasting colours that we can’t tell what’s going on. And the film had a very heavy handed American Werewolf In London concept which was unintentionally funny.
The introduction of Dr. Jekyll was nice but then they went too far for a film called The Mummy. The effects were dull and boring. The film was plagued with poor and unnecessary narration. For a film called The Mummy, it had very little of it.
The Mummy (2017) – 2/5
