A Monster Calls – Mini Review (Spoiler Free)

The Monsters stories 1 & 2 were amazing executed. Reminiscent of Deathly Hallows Part 1’s tale of the three brothers but better. Colourful and beautiful with actual rich story content explored all too briefly but greatly for the film. The themes this film are some of the darkest I’ve seen displayed in such a way. This is not a kids film that also appeals to adults, it’s an adult film that can appeal to kids. The honesty and truth throughout are beautifully shown and pay off heartbreakingly. Lewis MacDougall as the films protagonist may be the best child performance I have ever seen. So powerful and believable in every way. A massive talent has been discovered in him.

A small Easter egg at the end relating grandparents to the Monster was beautiful. An original song by Keane. Keane is always a win. Obviously the visuals were great. The more I think about this film the more I love it but right now, this is where I stand.

A Monster Calls – 4.5/5
