Why REY isn’t a MARY SUE

There has been a lot of fuss going round about Rey being a “Mary Sue” which for those of you who don’t know is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities. All of this for Rey is correct apart from the “unrealistic abilities” part… Why?

They aren’t unrealistic as there are reasons for them. She wasn’t born a “Mary Sue” but she became one due to what happened to her in her unknown past and whatever (unknown) amount of force power is inside her. In my opinion she is no “Mary Sue” when it comes to flying and repairing because we know she spent her entire life scavenging for parts in ships and as she says in the film “I’ve flown ships before”, so we know she homed her skills as a pilot while growing up also. Right now she seems a “Mary Sue” with the force but we have been given no insight into why yet as the filmmakers have kept the rest of her past (including who her parents are) a secret. So in the end I believe we will get a reason for everything that made her into who she is and Rey will no longer be categorised as a “Mary Sue” and will become an even greater and more fulfilling character than she already is.

Hopefully I have cleared all that nonsense up and all of you now see Rey the way I see her. She is a great character and the perfect one to continue the Star Wars saga. No “Mary Sue” here, just an inspiring and fulfilling character.
