Amanda Waller (some government geezer) has captured some of the worlds worst criminals with the help of spoiler and is keeping them in a very harsh prison where for some reason Ike Barinholtz is in charge. WTF? Anyway when shizzle of course goes down Waller has the idea of having the bad guys work together to stop the shizzle… instead of just calling Batman or someone.
Ok the good! Batman! Ben Affleck as Batman is awesome once again which is a bit poo considering the film is called Suicide Squad. And don’t just call me a Batman fan-boy (which I am), Batman is literally so cool in this film. Ben Affleck’s Batman is the most Batman Batman we’ve ever seen. I’m literally freaking out inside when he does some Batmany stuff. Although it is for like 2 seconds so 😦
Everyone. He has done it. I have never hated him as much as everyone else but you can’t argue here. Everyone, round of applause for Jai Courtney! *clap* *clap* *clap* What a performance. But so much more potential. You could see how funny and likeable this character of Captain Boomerang was in certain moments of the film and Jai Courtney was perfect for the role. But as I said it was more potential than actual laughs.
Song choices. The song choices were great. I love my soundtracks and the songs used were great. I can’t really talk about them as I am not reviewing songs but I can list a few and hopefully you will agree these are good tracks. Kanye West’s ‘Black Skinhead’, Eminem’s ‘Without Me’ and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
Unfortunately there is a lot more bad in this film than there is good. The story, the editing of it and the way it was told is a complete shambles. Scenes are all over the place and in the wrong order. And not in the Pulp Fiction good kind of wrong order, I mean the Suicide Squad kind of wrong order. Scenes would come out of nowhere and would serve to simply give characters some backstory that isn’t needed and just feels forced.
Songs. Yes the songs are good but they are used to shit. There are so many songs that only around ten seconds of every song is heard. At the beginning of the film there are three songs each straight after the previous one. It can be argued that these songs are used to give a theme to the characters or to introduce them. What’s wrong with an original score to give all the characters their own theme songs. Steven Price has done great music in the past, he is an Oscar winning composer and yet the songs made him unnecessary and scores are a big part of the film experience in my opinion.
All the squad besides Deadshot and Harley Quinn were under-utilised and undeveloped. This is the Suicide Squad not The Deadshot and Harley Quinn Movie. Don’t say it is hard to develop all the characters in just one film… Guardians of the Galaxy did it an don’t say top comparing DC to Marvel… Why not? They’re both films! If that film can do it why can’t this film? If the director of Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed can do it then why can’t the director of Fury do it? I know! Because the Joker. We all love the Joker right? We’re totally not tired of the Joker yet right? I mean it’s not like this is the third live action Joker we’ve got in 8 years right? Oh wait. But he draws the non fans in! Oh look its that clown guy from Batman he’s cool let’s go see it! Yeah if you didn’t get the message the Joker is totally unnecessary for this film but he’s there of course.
Will Smith was Will Smith
Ok the villain. I won’t spoil the villains but I will say this about one of the two… It jumped straight out of Gods of Egypt. If you don’t know, that is bad. With a cast like this film they resorted to some CGI crap as the villain. Some CGI is great and is a bit too much clicker from The Last of US but is far better than villain #2. Ok I’m going to tell you villain #1 and if you don’t want o know skip ahead now. Gone? Gone? Gone? Good. Enchantress.. Enchantress is not part of the squad she is a villain and a cool villain in her witch form until she too turns full on Gods of Egypt. FFS!
Choppy editing. Choppy story. Under-utilised squad. Under-developed characters. Casting Will Smith (Just see Will Smith). Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn is as if the character has jumped from the comics onto the screen. Leto is ok. My fourth favourite Joker but there have only been five and they are all pretty good. The action was poo apart from one brief encounter with a villain. Plus flashbacks that weren’t really needed. Big question; is it better than Batman v Superman? In my opinion… No.
